One of the biggest victories DKW achieved, was winning
the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man in 1938. Ewald Kluge raced the 250cc
DKW and won the Junior TT. Kluge, who was leading the race in 1937 and
then had to cancel, had that year an unbelievable win. He obtained an
average speed of 127,3km/h, and the fastest lap was 129,3km/h! The record
for the full race was broken by Wood on a Moto Guzzi 13 years (!) later
in 1951. The fastest lap was unmatched until 1949! The DKW pilot had to
fill up his petrol tank twice because of the very high consumption of
the supercharged engine. All other drivers had to refuel only once. Kluge
was so fast, that he won the race anyway with more then 11 minutes ahead
of the second driver. Before the second world war started in 1939, the famous DKW drivers were: Bauhofer, Stegmann, Walfried Winkler, Gmelch, J. Klein, H. Winkler, K. Henkelmann, H. Sprung, K. Friedrich, Zündorf, Frentzen, Ley, Steinbach, H.P. Müller, Ewald Kluge, Siegfried Wünsche, Kirchberg, A. Müller, H. Fleischmann, W. Herz, K. Bodmer, Mansfeld, Rosemeyer, Babl, Braun, Schuhmann, Petruschke and the English drivers Stanley Woods and Erni Thomas. The DKW works racing team won many races and championships during that time. |
